The Making of a Mobile Friendly Website

Since being established in 1887 Eatons Solicitors have gone from strength to strength and now occupy 4 offices across Yorkshire. With over 50 members of staff, Eatons cover a broad range of services within both personal and commercial law. Their experts are on hand to give you the best possible advice to help support your case. Whether it is the often unwelcome task of writing a Will or solving an employment issue, Eatons are always ready to help and support you.

    The Goal

Eatons approached Cefar with the desire to bring their business into the modern world, to which Cefar suggested updating their desktop website into a fully functional responsive platform. By responsive, it means that the website adjusts to the device that the customer is using, such as a tablet, iPhone, PC and desktop. This is a functionality where the website can resize instantly depending on what sized device the user is using. Backed by research from google analytics, Cefar also discovered that the majority of visitors to the website came from handheld devices and instantly knew that this would necessitate significant changes in light of the upcoming “Mobilegeddon”.

    The Strategy

Cefar had designed and built Eatons’ previous website 2 years earlier and wanted to maintain their look and feel to ensure continuity, we also wanted to keep their branding (trademark yellow and grey colours). Then we had to make it responsive, without losing any of the key messages.

As a team, we identified all the similar styles and layouts that could be repeated when upgrading it to a mobile-friendly website. Essentially this would save time in development and mean the client would receive their new site in the quickest possible timeframe. From here, our development team reconfigured all the pages into a 4 big or 12 small column structure, then these columns were put into logical rows in priority order. This allows the content to stack underneath each other when viewed on a smaller screen. Based on the screen, the website will move, with content and images relocating. Images sizes and fonts will also have to adjust.

Then, the HTML and CSS was changed to fit in with the responsive design and all scripts were adapted to be compatible with not only modern mobiles but older browsers as well.

The final stage of converting the current website to responsive was to test, test, test! As with all aspects of any project we work on, this is something that Cefar takes extremely seriously.

    The Results

The end result saw Eatons boasting a fully functional responsive website built by Cefar. The new site allows the user to access Eatons on the move from any sized device at any time. Having this feature allows Eatons customers to view the exact services that they offer, navigate through to the contact page and have a great user experience, allowing Eatons to only ever be a fingertips distance away at any time.

The new responsive website is not only easy to maintain and a seamless experience for the user, but also improves their Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). It does this by optimising the content of the website, making it easy for Google to crawl to index your web pages, ultimately creating a higher conversion rate.

Eatons are extremely happy with their new mobile-friendly website and have found it promotes a modern and progressive image running alongside their professional, expert services.
