How a Band is similar to running a Business
It’s Sunday, the roast is in the oven, got the laptop out planning for the busy week ahead, and my favourite band playing in the background…. Coldplay. Their new album is out, which is great by the way, one of their best, but before I digress, it got me thinking about how Coldplay is probably up there with the longest standing and most successful bands ever to have existed. Of course, I then turned to Google and to my amazement discovered they have been together for 23 years! Apart from that making me feel very old, it also got me pondering…. Why and how have they stayed together for so long? In this fickle and tumultuous world, we seem to now live in, how have they managed to survive the ups and downs and come out on top? What makes a great band? What makes a great team? I started thinking and came to the realisation that my favourite band Coldplay is not too dissimilar to my work team, Cefar.
Obviously, a few things set us apart, but the fundamental components that create and maintain a strong unit and a successful and long-standing team are extremely similar, if not the same no matter what industry, discipline or setting you are in. There are certain roles that are needed in any team….and here I have identified who our key players are….in comparison to the nations favourite band.
Founder and Lead Singer
Of course, with any band, there has to be a founder. The person who had the idea and drive to get the band going. That would be me. As founder and front-runner of Cefar, I consider Cefar to be my baby, my passion and my life! I set Cefar up over 12 years ago after working in the industry. I identified a gap in the market for a reasonably priced, committed and niche digital agency, which was fully integrated but with a strong focus on creating bespoke and highly intuitive systems. Over the years I have realised that in order for a company to be successful it meant taking on all the right people and building up a highly efficient, trustworthy and talented team. And that is what I have…
Lead Guitar and Piano
Being a digital agency meant, of course, we needed the best ‘lead guitar and lead pianists’ around. In other words, our highly-skilled, talented and simply fantastic programmers. These are the guys who create the melody, hold down the tune and make the songs what they are. Our team of front and back end developers are the guys who hold the knowledge and passion for great programming, captivating and engaging websites and systems and make it all come together to deliver undeniably spectacular websites, systems and software.
The crazy drummer. Now, who could that be? Our design team of course! Our design team are full of energetic, eccentric and enthusiastic characters, with a passion for disruptive, eye-catching and explosive design. These are the guys who get you looking, who capture your imagination and catch your eye.
Nothing would be possible without the invaluable support from our team of highly organised, hardworking and devoted account handlers. These are the people who make sure everything is done, on time, to the highest quality… all with a big smile. They are there to support when people need it, drive when deadlines need to be met and deliver in client meetings and pitches. Great teamwork!
Team management and PR
This one is a given and doesn’t need much explaining, but it’s no good doing all this amazing work and not telling people about it. Our wonderful PR and Online Marketing team ensures the whole world (or as much of it as possible) knows just what we’re doing and when we’re doing it.
Crew (sound, lighting, support, runners, catering)
Now to the unsung heroes who ensure everything keeps ticking along smoothly. The office staff, the canteen workers, IT, the guys who keep our office looking spic and span. Without these people, none of the above would even be possible.
I guess what it has made me realise is just what a great team of people we have here, all working together, doing brilliant work, all with the same end goal. Sometimes you just need to take a step back to see what’s been achieved and make sure every team player knows just how appreciated they are.
I’m surrounded by great people.
Great clients, great audience… One day!
